Study Abroad in Taiwan

Originally known to Portuguese mariners in the 16th century as ‘Ilha Formosa’ or ‘the beautiful island’, for its inherent beauty, this island proudly displays towering mountain peaks and beautiful coastal scenes. Located 100 miles off the southeastern coast of the Asian mainland, it is considered to be a natural gateway for travelers to and within Asia. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries of the world, a melting pot of Hakka, Taiwanese and mainland Chinese people. Only about 390,000 of the people are indigenous, the original inhabitants of the island. And its traditional culture which is similar to that of China, though still apparent in rural towns, has largely been transformed into an industrialized society.

National Palace Museum- Having celebrated its 78th birthday in October 2003, this museum in Taipei is home to the finest collection of Chinese artifacts and art and the five-thousand year Chinese history. Its contents include ancient porcelain, bronze, paintings, jade, books and documents located in huge underground vaults carved into the mountain. Photography is forbidden inside the museum. Tours are available in Chinese, English, Japanese and French.

Fort San Domingo- Located in Tanshui, this structure is one of the oldest buildings in Taiwan, built in 1629 by the Spanish and later occupied by the Dutch in 1642. San Domingo was rebuilt in the present day by the British Consulate and is now in the hands of the Taiwanese government who maintains the compound as a national monument. The museum tells the story of its extensive history and is situated within the main building. This attraction is closed on Mondays.

Night Markets- Located in most major cities, these markets are part of the social scene attracting locals and tourists alike. The most popular activity at any night market is the eating which is sure to please. It is a bustling nighttime scene not to be missed, abound with colorful signs, good bargains on clothes, toys, CD’s, and delicious and inexpensive food.
