Mexico, An Illustrated History
Mexico, known as a haven of luxury resorts, white sand beaches and warm blue-green waters is place of relaxation and escape. However, Mexico is more than a playground for tourists; it is a diverse country with a fascinating and complex history. Before traveling to Mexico and spending time there it is important to gain a sense of the history that has shaped the politics, economy and culture of the land and people. While planning a trip to Mexico this became an important factor to me. I wanted to gain as much insight into Mexico’s past, present and predicted future, but like many busy travelers preparing to leave for a trip, I had limited time. I was fortunate enough to come across “Mexico, An Illustrated History” by Michael Burke. This condensed, yet detailed book was able to provide me with historical information into the indigenous society, conquest by Spain, Mexico’s Independence, NAFTA and the relations of present day Mexico and the United States. This quick read helps in understanding how this country began and is developing, whether you plan to relax on a splendid Mexican beach or re-live the past via colonial architecture and indigenous presence in Oaxaca. Reading Michael Burke’s book can help you appreciate Mexico even more!
